Make learning new words a game. When you learn a new word, commit to using it at least ten times in one day in a variety of contexts. Bonus: You might have fun annoying those around you!
GREEK AND LATIN ROOTS
At some point you will need to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words from context clues. If you have a working knowledge of some basic Greek and Latin prefixes and roots, you can often quickly decipher word meanings, particularly when words are scientific in nature. Perhaps youâve learned many of these roots in a science or world language class. If so, concentrate on those in this list that are new to you. This list is by no means complete, but it does contain a good sampling of roots that will aid your decoding skills.
For fun, take note of the English examples below that contain more than one of the roots. Autograph, for example, means âself-write.â
